Grace Church Community Center
Receives Grant From Avon

Avon Outward Bound Woman of Strength Day
Sharon Hernandez from Avon joined participants in
Women of Strength Day.

White Plains, NY - March 2009

Using balloons, ropes and marbles as props, instructors from Outward Bound led women from local shelters, many of them victims of domestic abuse, through a day of team building and trust building activities designed to give them a sense of empowerment. On March 28, 2009, More than thirty women from Samaritan House, Providence House, Oasis and My Sister’s Place participated in interactive games and exercises at the March 28th event sponsored by the Avon Foundation for Women in partnership with Grace Church Community Center.   Appropriately named “Women of Strength”, the event was held in the parish hall at Grace Episcopal Church in White Plains.

Recurring themes throughout the day were believing in yourself, being open to change, looking outside the box, perseverance and the importance of laughter in facing life’s challenges.  And there was much laughter as the women tackled a range of cooperative problem solving activities and discussed what they had learned as a result.

Each woman left with one small goal that they wanted to accomplish the following week and one participant who confessed that she had been reluctant to attend the event said she was leaving “rejuvenated and energized.”
