"Edgemont Girl Scouts Donate Food to Men’s Shelter"

brownies help GCCC

November 2004

It wasn’t about earning badges.

It was simply about demonstrating the spirit of sharing and caring when, two days before Thanksgiving, Brownies from Edgemont Girl Scout Troop GSWP1973 delivered turkey with all the fixings for distribution to the Open Arms men’s shelter in White Plains.

Seven third-grade Brownies with their leader, Linda Russo, and two adult volunteers, brought food leftover from the annual Third Grade Thanksgiving Feast held earlier that day at Seeley Place Elementary School.  As they unloaded trays of food, the Brownies talked excitedly about the feast and how 70 third-graders had dressed as pilgrims and Indians to perform skits, songs and to read individual letters of thanks to an audience of 200 parents, guests and teachers.

They also talked about how good it made them feel to be sharing food from the feast, which had been prepared by parents, with the needy who deserved to have a tasty meal at Thanksgiving too.

Food donated was distributed to Open Arms, located at 86 East Post Road in White Plains.  Open Arms provides shelter and rehabilitative services to homeless men, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and houses up to 50 men each night.  Grace Church Community Center (GCCC), a non-sectarian, non-profit, community-based organization operates the shelter.

GCCC, the largest social services agency in Westchester County, runs eight critical services programs to assist individuals and families who have nowhere else to turn.  Services include a soup kitchen, daycare for low-income families, shelters for men and women, a summer day camp for homeless children, a drop-in center for mentally handicapped adults, home health care for the elderly and the disabled, and housing services to prevent homelessness.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to GCCC can contact Christine Meyer, Director of Development, at (914) 949-3098 ext. 130 or at christinemeyer@gracecommunitycenter.org.  Monetary donations of any amount are gladly accepted and may be sent to GCCC Development Office, 52 N. Broadway, White Plains, NY 10603.
