"Local Homeless Shelters Donate to Hurricane Katrina Relief"

September 2005

They don’t have much, but homeless residents of the Open Arms men’s shelter and Samaritan House women’s shelter in downtown White Plains, were so moved by the suffering of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, that they dug into their pockets last week to contribute over $50 to the Hurricane Relief Fund.

The only money our residents have to live on is a check from Medicaid for $22.50 that they get every two weeks said John Rubin, Director of Shelter & Homeless Outreach Services for Grace Church Community Center which operates the two shelters.  That doesn’t stretch very far when you live in one of the most expensive counties in the country he added, but shelter residents were so touched by the tragedy in the Gulf that they wanted to do what they could to help.

Money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross.
